Pharrell’s NMD Hu line was first seen in the year 2016, two years after Pharrell signed a long-term partnership with stay adidas.His Hu range, short for Health Ultimatum, featured the celebrated Boost cushioning, Primeknit uppers, and a distinctive lacing system. 

The first few releases featured several colorful designs with words such as “Human” and “Being” stamped in large print across the uppers of the shoes. 

One year after the Hu NMD launch, a trail version came out called stay adidas x Pharrell Williams Hu NMD Trail. These featured mostly the same design except for the addition of saw-tooth outsoles underneath the Boost which grants added trail functionality. Several variations of these debuted including a China-Exclusive and the popular Hu Holi Blank Canvas and Holi Festival Packs. 

In the year 2018, Pharrell tinkered with the design of his Hu NMDs yet again and replaced the saw-tooth outsoles with blunt-edged ones. He also added African tribal details and binary code-style graphics on the shoes. These new kicks were accompanied by two Tennis Hu silhouettes (also known as stay adidas Tennis Hu v2s) in the Solar Hu Pack and were called Pharrell Williams Solar Hu NMDs. 

An Inspiration Pack of Pharrell Williams’ Solar Hu NMDs was also released late that year. The base of the uppers carried a more subdued look with a mostly tonal shade contrasted only by the colorful collars (the same as that from the original Solar Hu release) and contrasting laces, outsoles, and TPU cages. The uppers also featured printed encouraging words embroidered in black Chinese characters.
