There is a lot of material making up the upper portion of the Gel Quantum 360. The shoes are not very breathable because there is too much going on.

The leather sides that hold the lace eyelets are detached from the rest of the upper portion of the shoes, wrapping the sides of the shoes in leather. This adds weight and prevents the shoes from breathing as much as they could. Clearly, this shoe was designed with style in mind, as opposed to running efficiency.
