Lakai is the brainchild of two pro skateboarders, Mike Carroll and Rick Howard, in 1999. They wanted to produce skate shoes that any genuine skateboarder would be proud to own. In an industry where many brands capitalize on the skating culture and produce footwear that is more flash than substance, they thought they had a chance.
The design is clean and inspired by a classic, the Howard Select model, which came out in 2006. The second edition of the Flacos, Flexibility and great board feels, came out in the first half of 2019.
There are a few key differences between the two Flaco shoes. For the Flaco 2s, Lakai added tongue stabilizers to keep the tongues centered instead of moving around inside. The ventilation holes at the sides were removed, and the eye stays blend in with the rest of the uppers as opposed to the more prominent layout of the first Flacos.
The newer version dropped the Luxe-Lite insoles of Flaco 1s and instead used Delux-Lite sock liners. Para-Mount technology was also applied to the vulcanized soles; it provides better impact absorption. The chevron tread pattern of the old was dropped in favor of hexagon-shaped ones.
